MELCHIZEDEK

Hebrews 7:1–10 explains the greatness of Melchizedek, the mysterious priest-king who blessed Abraham in Genesis 14. The author highlights that Melchizedek’s priesthood is superior to the Levitical priesthood because Abraham—ancestor of Levi—gave him a tithe and received a blessing from him. By showing that Levi, in a sense, tithed through Abraham, the passage argues that Melchizedek’s priesthood is older, higher, and more enduring. This sets the stage for understanding Christ as the true and greater Melchizedek, whose priesthood surpasses the old covenant system.
